The Handmaid’s Tale

Offred, a handmaid, narrates this novel. Offred sleeps with the chauffeur Nick and plays Scrabble with Serena Joy’s husband, “The Commander”. Aunt Lydia leads the Red Center. Ofglen hangs herself before the Eyes of God can come after her. The Latin phrase “nōlīte tē bastardēs carborundōrum.” is featured.

Iris marries Richard Griffen to save the family business. Her father drank himself to death after Richard went back on the deal. Her sister Laura is institutionalized and undergoes an abortion. Turns out Richard got Laura pregnant. Richard kills himself and Iris lives out her days

The Testaments

Three narrators: one is Aunt Lydia, who writes the Ardua Hall Holograph. Agnes and Daisy are the other narrators, who all talk about the overthrow of Gilead. Lydia had become one of the founders of the Aunts and had drafted many of Gilead’s laws. She always wanted to take it down from the inside. Lydia really wants to find Baby Nicole. Agnes takes refuge with the aunts after she gets a cruel stepmother and watches a handmaid die in childbirth. Daisy’s parents own a store called “The Clothes Hound” She attends a protest. Daisy is actually Baby Nicole. Daisy pretends to let two “Pearl Girls” convert her to get into Gilead. Aunt Lydia puts a microdot full of secrets in Daisy’s arm, and Daisy and Agnes escape to Canada and help topple Gilead. The Epilogue is given by Professor Pieixeto, who analyzes events.
